African Astronomical Society - Outreach and Public engagement

In parallel with the AfAS-2024 conference, we organized impactful public outreach activities in collaboration with the outreach network in Morocco. These initiatives aimed to inspire and engage the general public and schools, and to promote the representation of minorities in STEM fields. The success of this outreach program inspired similar efforts during the IAU General Assembly in South Africa last August.

Securing Exhibition Spaces: the richness and diversity of the local network

NOC Morocco and the AfAS-2024 local organizing comittee that I co-chaired successfully secured the necessary funds to provide exhibition space for various associations across Morocco during the conference. Among the initiatives were the Atlas Dark Sky Foundation (dedicated to protecting dark skies), the Marrakech Amateur Astronomy Association (3AM) — the oldest astronomical association in Morocco, SpaceBus Morocco, and the digital outreach initiative SpaceChat. The Boujdour Astronomy Association and Sahara Astronomy Association represented the southern regions of Morocco, while the ATTARIK Foundation promoted their work on meteorites and planetary science. National coordinators for IAU - NOC - NAEC Morocco were also present. Additionally, Zridi Planetarium, The Little Astronomer (winner of the 'Astronomie Afrique' and SSVI contest), and various student clubs such as the Asif Astronomy Club (winner of the IAU Telescopes4All contest), AL AKHAWAYN University (AUI) Astronomy Club, and HEPAC Club were among the many initiatives highlighted.

Each association had its own shell scheme to present their activities, allowing them to introduce their initiatives to the African and international scientific and outreach community. Numerous collaborations and partnerships were forged, underscoring the enormous dedication and impact of these associations in promoting astronomy and science outreach. Their collective efforts continue to inspire and strengthen the astronomy network in Morocco and beyond. Well done to all involved!

Highlights of the Outreach activities

Key events included stargazing sessions, workshops for school children, and talks, all aimed at engaging the public. Many associations from various moroccan cities participated, enhancing the collaborative spirit of the conference.

Public events were a major highlight, with the Astronomy Street Show held in the Jema El Fena Square attracting a wide audience. Naked-eye sky observations, accompanied by constellation storytelling in multiple languages (Arabic, Amazigh, English, and French), were organized at Atlas Golf Marrakech, for participants of all ages.

A standout initiative was the SpaceBus Morocco program for solidarity, designed to support earthquake-affected regions. This program exemplified our commitment to using astronomy as a tool for community support and rebuilding.

Activities were conducted in Arabic, Amazigh, English, and French. This demonstrates the outreach network ability to address local needs while promoting scientific education.
